About This Book
The wave that swept through Kai's coastal Japanese village in March 2011 took nearly everyone he loved in a single afternoon. Now the teen must cross an ocean to New York, where kids whose lives were shattered by 9/11 are waiting to meet him. There, he gets a chance to find the American father he has never known, but to hold on to that hope, Kai must first decide whether he can ever go home again.
Quick Assessment
Told in verse, this novel follows a biracial teen who loses nearly his entire family and community in the 2011 Tohoku tsunami, then travels to New York and visits Ground Zero while searching for his estranged father. Expect raw depictions of death, grief, and devastation, though the story centers on recovery and rebuilding rather than gore. It is a strong choice for teens ready to discuss disaster, loss, and resilience, and the author's note lists sources for the real events portrayed.
