About HootRated

HootRated helps parents find books that match their child's reading level AND emotional readiness. We provide data. You make the decisions.

The Problem

Your child reads at a 5th grade level but is only 8 years old. The books that challenge them intellectually might contain themes they aren't emotionally ready for. And the age-appropriate books? Too easy. Boring. They stop reading.

This is the Gifted Kid Paradox — and it affects millions of families. Reading drops from 57% daily at age 8 to 35% at age 9 (Scholastic), right at the age when content complexity outpaces emotional maturity.

Our Solution

HootRated rates every book on two independent axes:

  1. Reading Level — How cognitively demanding is the text? (Grade K through 12)
  2. Content Intensity — How emotionally/thematically intense is the content? (Level 1-5: Gentle to Very Intense)

No other tool does both. We help you find a book that's challenging enough to keep them engaged but doesn't contain content you weren't expecting.

What We Are NOT

  • We are not a censorship tool. We never recommend removing books.
  • We are not politically affiliated. We describe content, we don't judge it.
  • We are not a replacement for parental judgment. We provide data — you decide what's right for your family.

Who's Behind HootRated

HootRated was started by George Marzouka, a father of two boys — one in kindergarten, one in 4th grade.

It began with his older son. Watching him struggle to find books that were right for him, George noticed something: search engines work well when you already know what you're looking for. But choosing the next book to read is different. You usually don't know what you want — only what you've liked before, and what you haven't.

That's where HootRated comes in. It learns from your child's reading patterns to recommend books they're more likely to love — not just by reading level, but by content and by how much they enjoyed the last one. You can even tell HootRated why your child liked a book, and that gets folded into finding the next one.

We have no corporate sponsors. We're not pushing any particular title. A recommendation here is tailored to your child — not to an algorithm trying to steer their interests one way or another. It's about one thing: cultivating a love of reading by finding books your child is genuinely going to enjoy.
