About This Book

William Music takes a watchman job for three dollars a day, carrying a revolver so unreliable it is more danger to him than to anyone else. The real threat is the coal company he guards, whose owner will do anything to crush a union, and the night he and his friend Regus Bone catch two organizers. Their choice will change their lives and all of Switch County, and it matters because doing right can cost more than one man can bear alone.

Quick Assessment

Set in 1931 Kentucky, this adult-market novel follows a drifter who becomes a guard for a coal company that is hostile to unions, and the decision he faces when he and a friend capture union organizers. Expect realistic violence involving firearms, labor conflict, moonshine drinking, poverty, and a widow's romantic attraction that stays fairly restrained. It is best suited to mature teens who can discuss moral compromise, and it is inspired by real events.
